broken map error reporting

app can't find it

Not worth fixing this round because we will be changing the whole map saving/loading setup soon.

Without reproduction steps, it's difficult to tell whether this issue is still applicable or not. Do we still have a problem with generating invalid map configurations at all? What was the "lousy" error reporting?
